FSSAI – what is it ?
The FSSAI or Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Historically the FSSAI was established by Former Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss,Government of India on 5th August 2011 under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which was operationalized in the year 2006.
It has a total of 8 regional offices located in Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Cochin, Lucknow, Chandigarh and Chennai and also 19 referral laboratories notified by FSSAI, 88 State/UT laboratories, 172 laboratories that are NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accredited private laboratories notified by FSSAI.
The Headquarters of FSSAI are located at New Delhi
Current Chairman of FSSAI is Rita Teaotia
